Evictee names newborn 'Gusur'

JAKARTA: A fishing family recently evicted from their makeshift house on the banks of the Muara Angke River, North Jakarta, have named their newborn baby Gusuryanto, nicknamed Gusur, which means to evict.

Warinah, 40, said they picked the name after Idul Fitri prayers on Tuesday because the week-old boy was born after their parents had been evicted a month ago and were still homeless.

"He was born last week at Atma Jaya hospital. His weight was 2.4 kilograms when he was born," said the mother as she attempted to shoe away flies in their makeshift tent.

Warinah said non-governmental organization Government Watch covered all the medical expenses when she delivered the baby at the hospital.

Gusur is Warinah's ninth child but three had died due to poverty related diseases. -- JP
