Ethnic villages in Ujungpandang

UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: The mayoralty will allocate Rp 8 billion (US$3.4 million) to develop what it calls "multi-ethnic villages" in the city.

The project aims not only at improving relations among the various ethnic groups in the city but also attracting tourists who care about seeing ethnic harmony.

Mayor Malik B. Masry told a workshop on ethnicity the mayoralty would build the villages for Malays, ethnic Chinese and Arabs.

The ministry of public works completed the feasibility study last year, Masry said as reported by Antara.

The site plan presented in the workshop showed that Chinatown would cover Jl. (Street) Lembe, Jl. Bacan, Jl. Ternate, Jl. Bali and Jl. Lombok.

The Malay village would include Jl. Sangir Lr. 206 and the Arab one would cover Masjid Arab area on Jl. Lombok. (pan)
