English teaching needs reform

JAKARTA: An English-language teaching expert, Craig Stevenson, has attributed the poor mastery of English of Indonesian students to inefficient rote learning.

Speaking at the launching of an 11-volume series of English @ EF books that are used in many English courses here on Wednesday, Stevenson suggested that teachers give their students more opportunity to practice. He said English language teaching, too, needs to be reformed.

Stevenson, who is the assistant academic coordinator for the English First Indonesia course which currently has 10,000 students, also advocated educational excursions and student exchanges to facilitate learning. (swe)
