English and position
I am 24 years old and have recently graduated from a computer school. Although I have been working for five years I still study English at the Open University for my second bachelor's degree.
I fully agree with Dady Wijaya ("Your Letters" Aug. 4, The importance of English), who believes that English should be taught to children as early as possible. Santa Ursula school should reconsider its decision to stop teaching English to elementary pupils.
In my company, English is essential and frequently used. Most of my colleagues are literate in English. They are proficient in reading, writing and speaking.
Unfortunately, there are some who are not and they have lower positions in the company. Their careers are blocked and advancement is difficult. They are afraid to go abroad for a meeting although they have the opportunity. What a shame!
I therefore suggest that English is taught at all elementary schools. The sooner children learn English the better. They must be prepared to face the globalization and free trade era as outlined by Wijaya.
