Emission competition held in Bali
DENPASAR, Bali: In order to raise public awareness of fuel emission standards, the Office of the State Minister for the Environment held an "emission competition" in Bali on Wednesday.
Some 600 cars took part in the competition, said Erwin Suryadarma, acting spokesman for the Denpasar municipal government. The national standards were set in 1993 and stipulate that gasoline-fueled cars, for example, can emit a maximum of 4.5 percent carbon monoxide (CO) and 2,400 ppm of hydrocarbons (HC).
Prizes were on offer for the cars that emitted the lowest levels of CO and HC. Similar competitions will also be held in the near future in four other big cities -- Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. -- JP
