Elementary schools in poor condition

CILACAP, Central Java: At least 130 Islamic elementary schools in Purbalingga are in poor condition, an official said on Tuesday.

Most pupils have been sent to nearby buildings or houses to study, Zabidi Toni, head of Purbalingga's ministry of religious affairs, said.

Only 20 percent of the damaged buildings have received a renovation fund, he said.

"Most of the buildings are too old and do not have proper floors or roofs," he added.

The administration needs at least Rp 2 billion to rehabilitate the schools, he said. (45/edt)
