Election body launches website

JAKARTA: The General Elections Commission (KPU) officially launched on Wednesday its website to provide the public access to the election process.

KPU chairman Nazaruddin Sjamsuddin said the website, kpu.co.id, would help the presidential and legislative elections run smoothly without losing public control.

He said the 1999 election was internationally acclaimed as the most democratic to have been held in the country, but fell short of a method to administer, present and publish data related to the election.

"We don't want to make the same mistakes we did in the previous election," Nazaruddin, a political scientist, said on the sidelines of a ceremony marking the launching.

The election body has built a local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) to support its tasks from the registration of voters to the vote-counting stage.

Via the website, the public will be allowed to register its comments, share ideas and monitor the election process. -- Antara
