Eight years sought for terror suspect

JAKARTA: The prosecution recommended on Monday an eight-year prison term for Rusman "Gun Gun" Gunawan for his alleged involvement in the bombing of the J.W. Marriott hotel that killed 12 people and wounded hundreds of other in Aug., 2003.

The prosecution argued that Gun Gun deserved the jail sentence as he had provided the funding for the terror act. "We recommend this sentence as the defendant created widespread terror among the populace," state prosecutor T. Muzafar said during Gun Gun's trial in the South Jakarta District Court.

Aside from the jail term, the prosecution also recommended the forfeiture to the state of evidence in the form of US$2,700 and S$1,000 dollar.

The trial was adjourned until Oct. 18 to hear defense pleas. -- JP
