Eight wushu athletes to compete in c'ships

JAKARTA (JP): Three wushu athletes from Jakarta -- Susyana, Gorane Bulana and Herman Wijaya -- are expected to finish in the top six at the Fifth Asian Wushu Championships in Hanoi from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8.

The three athletes are among eight Indonesian athletes who will fly to Hanoi later this month for the event. The other five athletes -- Dwi Arimbi, Suhendro, Darwis Taniwan, Sandy Liong and Howandi -- are from North Sumatra.

Amos Panjaitan, the Indonesian Wushu Association (WI) official in charge of athlete development, said his athletes had been training for the championships since June.

"They tested their skills at the 2000 National Games in East Java in June," he said after meeting with Wismoyo Arismunandar, the chairman of the National Sports Council, on Friday.

He said all of the athletes, who will perform in the individual taulo (arts) events, received financial support from WI's provincial chapters for the championships. (ivy)
