Easter celebrated peacefully in Ambon

JAKARTA (JP): Despite fears of renewed unrest, peace prevailed in the riot-devastated Maluku capital of Ambon on Sunday as thousands of Christian residents celebrated Easter outdoors and in churches, Antara reported.

Celebrations began on Saturday afternoon as residents in a number of Christian neighborhoods prepared for the solemn celebration on the following day.

Gospel recitals were heard throughout the evening over loudspeakers, the news agency said. Residents in some neighborhoods gathered to chat and joke.

Early on Sunday, hundreds of Christians proceeded through the streets, carrying torches and lanterns and chanting prayers.

The parade, which included people in cars and other vehicles, drew attention from other Christians who gathered to watch.

Security forces were on guard at crucial sites in the town, but they were reportedly in a relaxed mood.

Antara said some security personnel mingled with the crowd, telling them they should not be easily provoked.

The situation has almost returned to normal, the news agency said.

Refugees sheltering in Silo Church and in the residential area of Mangga Dua in Nusaniwe subdistrict were no longer showing signs of stress, the news agency said.

It said priests preached to their congregation to forget the recent unrest pitting groups of Christians and Muslims.

They warned that violence brought no good but would earn divine retribution for culprits.

At least 200 people were killed during the violence that broke out in mid-January and ceased late last month. Tens of thousands of residents, mostly migrants to the province, fled during the unrest. (aan)
