Earthquake shakes Medan

MEDAN, North Sumatra: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook Medan yesterday, Antara reported.

There was no immediate report of casualties or structural damage in Medan or other cities in northern Sumatra.

The tremor, lasting about five seconds, sent people scurrying out of houses, hotels and office buildings, the news agency said.

The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency office in Medan put the epicenter of the quake in Blang Kejeren, a town on the North Sumatra-Aceh border.

The quake was also felt in Banda Aceh, Antara said. (09)
