E. Timor youths stage rally

YOGYAKARTA: Over a hundred East Timorese youth held a peaceful
rally outside the provincial legislature here yesterday to
observe the Nov. 12, 1991 Dili incident.

The youths did not carry banners but distributed flowers and a
copy of their demands to spectators curiously watching on.

The demands included the release of East Timorese separatist
leader Jose "Xanana" Gusmao who is currently serving a 20-year
jail term in Jakarta.

The students were met by Subagyo Waryadi, speaker of the
provincial legislature, who maintained that Xanana had been
jailed because he had violated criminal laws.

The 1991 Dili incident saw a bloody clash between security
forces and demonstrators which resulted in over 50 dead. (23)
