E. Timor history lesson on trial

DILI, East Timor: Primary and high schools in the province this year begin learning the history of East Timor as a supplement to Indonesian history.

East Timor Education Chief Soekarman said that teaching East Timor history is still on trial and therefore the books are only issued to teachers as guidelines, Antara reported.

There has been a raging debate on the inclusion of East Timor's history in the school curriculum and particularly over the writing of the history text books.

The East Timor history textbooks, written by local historians, have not yet been fully approved, but Soekarman said that they are almost ready because the latest version no longer require major revision. (emb)
