E. Java commander warns of unrest

SURABAYA: Brawijaya Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sudi Silalahi on Friday claimed that there were several groups, who were mobilizing the poor to create unrest on Christmas eve.

"We've detected these groups and will continue to monitor their activities," Sudi said without identifying the groups in question.

He said he had received intelligence reports that unrest would be created to trigger religious conflict.

Sudi added the plan was part of an effort to topple President Abdurrahman Wahid.

These groups, Sudi claimed, had a clear coordinated structure and would start mobilizing crowds on Sunday evening. (nur/lup)
