Dutch to bolster police competence

SURABAYA: The Dutch Embassy, in cooperation with the International Organization of Migration (IOM), promised on Tuesday to help the Indonesian police improve their professionalism.

"We will train them to act professionally and build partnerships with people," IOM chief of mission John Stephen told The Jakarta Post after a seminar at East Java Police Headquarters.

Stephen said IOM had carried out research with migrant communities in Situbondo, East Java; Bogor, West Java; and Pontianak, West Kalimantan. Violence against migrants, and human trafficking have been rampant there.

He hoped the results of the survey would help the police restore their image and bring them closer to the people. --JP
