Dutch pianist to stage jazzy opera

JAKARTA: Famous Dutch pianist, composer and arranger Mike del Ferro will give a performance at the Erasmus Huis on Monday.

The event, billed "Jazz & Opera", will start at 7:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

Mike won first prize at the Rotterdam jazz piano competition in 1989. In the same year he was given an award as best soloist at the International Europe jazz contest in Brussels and at the Karlovy Vary jazz contest in former Czechoslovakia.

He started playing classical piano at the age of nine, and gained his masters degree in 1990 from the University of Cologne, Germany.

His father was opera singer Leonard del Ferro, who sang and recorded with Maria Callas in 1958.--JP
