Drivers urged to obey traffic laws

JAKARTA: Most drivers in the city have a complete lack of interest in traffic signs or laws, which is one reason for the heavy congestion on almost every road in Jakarta, an official at the South Jakarta Mayoralty said on Tuesday.

Head of South Jakarta's transportation agency, Nurbun Buntaraga, said that drivers, especially those of public transportation vehicles and trucks, also neglected the conditions of their vehicles, which often forced them to stop in the middle of roads to do repairs.

Public transportation vehicles often just stop anywhere to pick up passengers -- and rarely at actual bus stops -- thus harassing other motorists and causing traffic jams, he was quoted by city's official website beritajakarta as saying.

He urged the drivers to comply with the laws to reduce traffic congestion.-- JP
