Drivers 'unaware' they smuggled fuel

CILEGON, West Java: Twenty-nine drivers of tanker trucks were arrested on Friday by local police for illegally transporting diesel fuel. The drivers said they were not aware of what they were doing.

Some of the drivers told interrogators on Saturday they were shocked when their trucks were intercepted by police officers. They also admitted to having no delivery orders.

The diesel fuel the drivers and their assistants were transporting was allegedly to be smuggled to Singapore via the Pelindo II pier in Ciwandan, West Java.

Cilegon Police chief Supt. Irawan Dachlan told Antara the mastermind of the illegal business and the owner of the smuggled diesel fuel was identified by his initial "Y". (sur)
