Driver charged over fatal crash

SEMARANG, Central Java: Police here charged a driver as a suspect on Monday after his container truck slammed into a wedding reception in Ambarawa, Semarang, Central Java, killing at least 16 people (not 17 as earlier reported by The Jakarta Post).

The suspect, Wawan, was among the 14 seriously injured victims in the accident and is receiving medical treatment at the Ungaran hospital.

Semarang Police chief Adj. Comr. Kusnoto said his office was searching for Wawan's assistant, Toha, who fled the scene after the fatal crash on Sunday. -- JP
