DPA should be disbanded
DPA should be disbanded
Based on the nation's interests, the controversy over the
tenure of the members of the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA) and
its existence should be responded to, effectively.
As the 1945 Constitution, under which the DPA exists, is not a
holy writ and given that the presence of 45 DPA members only
burdens the state budget (monthly expenses incurred could amount
to Rp 1 billion), it is high time we disbanded this institution.
As they have no clear plans on their agenda, nor standard
working mechanism, we can only assume that their job is akin to
moonlighting. Their job is unclear. They give directives and
advice, yet all their advice is not binding in nature. Apart from
attending ceremonies or giving occasional advice to the
president, they spend most of their days doing nothing.
Without their contribution, there is still a lot of
constructive criticism, advice and useful suggestions or views
from other experts through the media or the House of
Representatives (DPR). The President, additionally, prefers to
consult the DPR over important issues rather than the DPA.
Not surprisingly, a recent report published by Rakyat Merdeka
on Sept. 15, 2001 reported that some DPA employees were noticed
snoring in broad daylight, an indication that they have a lot of
idle time. Is that not saddening or embarrassing?.
I suggest that Mr. Ahmad Tirto Sudiro does not respond to
public criticism by referring to Chapter 3, Law No 3/1967 on the
DPA and its elaboration, since your statement would clearly
involve elements of personal interest.
With the absence of DPA, this country would run smoothly. Over
the years, the DPA has merely become a place for former high-
ranking officials who are nothing more than puppets.
If you, Mr. Sudiro, along with other members of the DPA, are
really polite and wise, as you professed yourself to be in Bisnis
Indonesia (Sept. 9, 2001), you should all resign. Just think,
your heroic step would signify your sacrifice, which would, in
turn, be highly laudable and memorable. For the public's benefit,
your resignation would ease the government of its already heavy
burden.
