Don't leave Megawati home alone

The absence of Abdurrahman Wahid, for about two weeks, in search of what he claims to be international support for Indonesia's economic restructuring efforts has left Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri alone at home in charge of the nation's business.

Some have decried what they view as the irresponsibility of the President in entrusting a woman to run the affairs of the state. What would happen if there was a fire or car accident?

The President, who we know as Gus Dur, is an extraordinary head of state because he is also the head of tens of millions of Muslims under the sociopolitical group Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) banner. When he is in doubt, as a statesman he will rely on his devout religious beliefs and wisdom.

In theory, Megawati is now head of the Indonesian Military and can declare war and sign international treaties in the absence of the real commander, the president of the republic. A year ago, nobody would be willing to accept the possibility that things would remain "normal" except in some districts under her leadership.

Some extreme elements, who feel they are marginalized by the government's policies, especially those who have lost their jobs, are among the many who feel ignored by the new leaders.

Upon returning home, President Abdurrahman should settle down at least for another year before embarking on an adventure to search of prospective investors. For this purpose, he actually can instruct his ministers from now on. The people want the President to concentrate on urgent problems at home first. It would be harder to suggest to the head of state if the House of Representatives one day passes a law that the President needs its approval first before traveling abroad to seek more gold and greater fame.

With so many extreme and unsatisfied elements, who perhaps have lost their jobs because of the change in administration and now use whatever means to harass others, with the backing of a certain but unseen mafia or mafias, he should not stay too long overseas and allow the "Queen President" to defend the nation alone.
