Donation to prevent school dropouts

BOGOR (JP): The Bogor administration donated on Thursday Rp 60,000 in scholarship funds each for 720 poor elementary school children, including those in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Islamic elementary schools, considered most likely to become dropouts.

Besides money, the students also received stationery.

Bogor Mayor Iswara Natanegara, who symbolically handed down the aid on Thursday, said that economic woes had forced many parents to give up on their children's education.

"The government is also responsible for the students' potential to become dropouts. If such a condition is not properly dealt with, there will be a bigger social catastrophe resulting from inferior education." (21/ylt)
