Domestic help needs help

MALANG, East Java: Activists here are urging the government to pay more attention to household servants in the country, including through setting wage standardization.

Kridawati Sadhana of the Women's Studies Institute said servants, often an integral part of the household and a huge worker base, rarely receive attention in the country and are not covered by any legislation.

"The government should set a minimum wage standard. If necessary the government should issue a law or ruling which governs this profession," she said as quoted by Antara.

Kridawati noted that servants were often paid in the lowest wage bracket because of the lack of legislation.

She noted that servants should qualify for similar legal protection as laborers.
