Dolly seeks leniency

SURABAYA: While some groups want nightspots to close or have their operational hours limited during the coming holy month of Ramadhan, the biggest red light district in Surabaya, known as Dolly, is seeking leniency in relation to its operating hours.

The red light district is part of the Suaka Dolly (Dolly Sanctuary) and has sent a letter to Commission E of the provincial legislative council, asking legislators to allow the area to open from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m..

The letter, signed by 500 sex workers, 239 employees from the district, 50 vendors operating in the area, 30 becak drivers and 16 taxi drivers, was handed over to legislators by Suaka Dolly chairman Aryono on Wednesday.

Commission E chairman Harbiah Salahuddin said that it would be impossible to completely close the complex.

"Limiting its operating hours is likely," he said.

East Java Muhammadiyah Youth chairman Abdul Azis had earlier said that Dolly must be closed during Ramadhan. He also said that a comprehensive solution was needed. --Antara
