Dollar trades higher in Europe

LONDON (UPI): The dollar was higher in Europe yesterday, moving in narrow ranges in thin trading conditions ahead of a batch of U.S. economic data out later in the week.

In London, the U.S. currency was quoted at 1.5785 against the German mark, up from the last close of 1.5780. Against the Japanese yen the dollar was at 100.25, from its last finish of 100.20.

Adrian Cunningham of Union Bank of Switzerland said the dollar was moving in narrow ranges as dealers waited for the release of U.S. economic data later in the week.

British factory gate price statistics had no effect on the pound.

The pound was at 1.5595 against the dollar, unchanged from the last London close. Against the German mark, sterling was at 2.4616, up from 2.4600 at the previous close.

The French franc came under pressure after Jacques Delors announced he would not run in the country's presidential race next year.

The French franc was at 3.4380 against the German mark, down from the last close of 3.4300.

The Italian lira faced renewed pressure ahead of Prime Minister's Silvio Berlusconi's questioning by anti-corruption magistrates Tuesday.

In Frankfurt, the dollar opened at 1.5805 German marks, up from the previous close at 1.5780.

In Zurich, the dollar opened at 1.3380 Swiss francs, up from the previous close at 1.3365.

In London, the pound opened at $1.5585, down from the previous close of $1.5590.

In Paris, the dollar opened at 5.4357, up from the previous close of 5.4240

In Brussels, the dollar opened at 32.48, up from the previous close at 32.44.

In Rome, the dollar opened at 1,635, up from the previous close at 1,632.12.

In Tokyo, the dollar closed at 100.26 Japanese yen, down from the previous close of 100.40.

In Singapore, the dollar closed at S$1.4666, down from the previous close at 1.4700.

In Hong Kong, the dollar closed at HK$7.7385, up from the previous close at HK$7.7383.

Gold closed at $376.85 in Hong Kong, up from the previous close at $376.65. Gold opened at $376.50 an ounce in Zurich, unchanged from the previous close, while in London it started trading at $377, up from the previous close at $376.75.

Silver opened at $4.75 in Zurich, while in London it opened at $4.73, up from the previous close at $4.68.
