Disruptive bargirls to be expelled

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Shocked by the rising incidence of divorce, the authorities in Kalabahi, on Alor island, have expelled 20 prostitutes they believe are responsible for marital break-ups.

Alor military commander Lt. Col. Suwarno said yesterday the authorities took the drastic measures following the mysterious death of a youth in a brothel.

Suwarno said the authorities had also received a complaint from a housewife that her husband sold his wedding ring to pay his outstanding debts to a prostitute.

Suwarno said most of the 250 prostitutes in Kalabahi that pose as waitress in restaurants came from West Nusa Tenggara and East Java.

Ahmad Abdullah, a community leader in Kalabahi, said the expulsion of the prostitutes was expected to reduce the number of marital disputes in the impoverished district. (yac)
