Discussion on Islamic culture

JAKARTA (JP): The Istiqlal Foundation will present both speeches and a panel discussion on museums and Islamic culture at the Ministry of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications on Saturday, April 12.

The discussion, to be opened by Minister of Religious Affairs Tarmizi Taher, will be held in conjunction with the opening of Bayt Al-Quran and Istiqlal Museum at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in East Jakarta on April 20.

Taufik Abdullah, a professor of history at the National Institute of Sciences, will also speak.

In addition, speakers will include Ibrahim Alfian, and Hasan Muarif Ambary, a professor of archaeology, who will discuss the archaeological aspects of writing history.

During the second session, speakers Abdul Hadi and Jalaludin Rakhmat will discuss the role of the Koran in cultural development. The last session will feature Edi Sedyawati, director general of cultural affairs at the Ministry of Education and Culture, and Haswidi A. Taufik. Both speakers will discuss the role of Islamic art museums in Indonesia. (raw)
