Disco closed during Ramadhan

PONTIANAK, Central Kalimantan: In an effort to show respect for Muslims who are fasting, the Pontianak government has banned discotheques from operating during Ramadhan.

Through a decree signed by Pontianak Mayor Buchary Abdurrahman, the city government has also prohibited city residents from using firecrackers during Ramadhan between October 2 and November 3.

Karaoke lounges and cafes are still allowed to open, although the operations will be restricted between 8 p.m. and 12 p.m. In the decree, the mayor also called on restaurant and foodstall owners to respect the Muslims who are fasting by placing an awning in front of their stalls to keep them from view. -- Antara
