Disabled rally against KPU

JAKARTA: Dozens of people with physical disabilities staged a rally on Monday in front of the Constitutional Court to protest the General Elections Commission's (KPU) health criteria for presidential candidates, which they said was discriminatory.

The protesters, part of the Disabled Anti-discrimination National Front, said KPU ruling No. 26/2004 on registration guidelines for presidential candidates and ruling No. 37/2004 on candidate health examinations discriminated against the handicapped.

In a statement, the protesters said the rulings had stripped them of their political rights and held the KPU, the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) and the Supreme Court responsible. -- JP
