Dili rioters go on trial

DILI, East Timor: The police have submitted dossiers on 16 people accused of inciting the Dec. 24 riot in which a member of the Armed Forces was killed.

East Timor police chief Col. Yusuf Muharam said yesterday the authorities had not yet apprehended another five suspects.

"We have tracked them down to other provinces, but to no avail. We hope they will be arrested soon," Yusuf was quoted by Antara as saying.

The riot broke out when tens of thousands of East Timorese flocked to Dili to welcome Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo on his arrival from Oslo after accepting his Nobel peace prize. (pan)
