Diamonds are forever, not maids

JAKARTA: A housemaid allegedly absconded late on Wednesday from the house of Betty Suganda, 69, in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, where she had started working the previous day.

One of the house's occupants, Eny, 32, said she had looked for the housemaid, Rumi, 33, all over the house.

Eny said there was no sign of Rumi in the house, but she noticed that Betty's cupboard had been forcibly opened and its contents left in disarray.

According to the house occupants, a jewelry case containing Betty's diamond rings and certification documents for the rings, two glasses and Rp 2 million (US$225) in cash was missing. They said that they had suffered total losses of about Rp 55 million.

Cempaka Putih Police said the maid's employers didn't have any information on her address. -- Antara
