Dewi's remains might be moved

BANDUNG, West Java: The grave of West Javanese heroine Dewi Sartika, located on Jl. Karanganyar, Bandung, might have to be moved to make way for development.

"The development of the central area of the city has been hampered by the presence of the graveyard," local councillor Muhidin Effendy said here on Tuesday.

Her remains will be moved to Cipadung Cibiru in East Bandung.

Besides Dewi Sartika, several other West Javanese heroes are also buried in the graveyard, such as Dr. Hasan Sadikin, whose name has been adopted as the name of the state hospital in Bandung, Husein Sastranegara who served the Indonesian Air Force and who Bangdung's airport is named after, and the first minister of home affairs, R.A.A Wiranatakususmah.

"There are many heroes buried here. We are shocked to know that the graveyard is going to be moved suddenly," a graveyard guard, Wawan Rachman said. (25)
