Dewi lands bronze, promotion for coach

MANILA: Dewi Prahara's bronze-medal winning performance in the vault in the women's all-round competition on Wednesday was also a windfall for her coach.

Dewi, the only Indonesian to medal in gymnastics at this year's Games, will get the honors, but her coach Wahid Wahyuni is set to land a promotion, Antara news service reported.

The 44-year-old coach from Banjarmasin said the National Sports Council promised before the Games that any coach from the ranks of the civil service would be promoted if their athlete got a medal.

"Thank God Dewi got the medal," he said. -- JP

Athletes hurt in quest for gold

MANILA: Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Kien Chong was flown to Manila on Wednesday after he was hospitalized in Bacolod City following his fight with Thailand's Tangtong Klongjan in the bantamweight division.

An uppercut 21 seconds into the bout on Tuesday by Klongjan broke Nguyen's jaw.

And in another major injury, Emille Crista Santos, the Philippines' best hope in the all-around gymnastics, suffered a broken left ankle when she fell awkwardly while attempting a backward somersault on the vault on Wednesday. -- AP
