Desy testifies at court

JAKARTA (JP): Famous actress Desy Ratnasari appeared on Wednesday at South Jakarta District Court as a witness in a drug case allegedly involving her friend Himandaka Wimala.

Defendant Himandaka was arrested by police detectives along with Desy and three other friends on May 22 this year on Jl. Asia Afrika in South Jakarta.

Police stopped the car the defendant was in and seized a small package of heroin, which Himandaka reportedly claimed later was his.

In the hearing, presided over by judge Munawir, the actress testified that she knew nothing about the drugs.

"That was my car. However, I didn't know who owned the drugs," she told a panel of judges at the district court.

In the previous hearing, prosecutor M. Udin charged the defendant with violating Article 78 of the 1997 Law on narcotics.

The article carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a maximum fine of Rp 500 million.

Judge Munawir adjourned the hearing until next week to hear testimonies from other witnesses. (asa)
