Demo to be held against workers' rights abuses

JAKARTA (JP): Some 100 workers from West Java who used to work abroad are slated to gather at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout on Monday in a rally to commemorate International Migrant Workers Solidarity Day and as part of the campaign against violence faced by migrant workers.

In a statement made available on Sunday, the organizer of the rally, Women's Solidarity-Indonesian Migrant Workers Advocacy Committee, stated that the action would focus on violations of workers' human rights.

"In the year 2000, it was reported that some 22,000 migrant workers were deported from Malaysia, 23 were raped in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, while another 116 workers were physically abused," the statement said.

The rally will start at 2 p.m. and be followed by a dialog to be attended by a number of social activists. (dja)
