JAKARTA: Constitutional Court chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie
announced on Tuesday that his office could not fulfill a request
to review Law No. 14/1985 on the Supreme Court.
Jimly said the court could only review laws and legislations
enacted after 1999, in accordance with the first constitutional
amendment, which ordered the formation of the court.
The court also rejected a request to review the verification
of political parties conducted by the ministry of justice and
human rights, which resulted in the disqualification of the
Indonesian National Unity Party (PNI).
"That is not part of the authority of the Constitutional
Court," Jimly said.
Since its establishment in August, the court had received 23
requests from the public for the judicial review of laws and
legislations. Four of the motions had been settled. - JP

Mahendra named MK secretary general
JAKARTA: A.A. Oka Mahendra, an advisor with the Ministry of
Justice and Human Rights, has been appointed the secretary-
general of the Constitutional Court.
Mahendra will be sworn in on Jan. 2, 2004, replacing Janedjri
M. Ghaffar, the acting secretary-general.
Janedjri will return to the People's Consultative Assembly
(MPR) to head the bureau in charge of Assembly meetings.
The court chief Jimly Asshiddiqie said on Tuesday his office
had also appointed Achmad Fadlil the court clerk.
Jimly said he hoped the court would move to its new office
building on Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta by mid-
January next year.
Currently, the court office is situated at Plaza Sentris on
Jl. Rasuna Said in South Jakarta. -- JP

Governor told to pick acting mayor
CIREBON, West Java: The Cirebon legislature demanded on
Tuesday that the West Java governor appoint an acting mayor for
the sake of continuity of public services.
Speaker of the legislature Suryana said he had written to
Governor Denny Setiawan to officially ask him to name a
replacement for former mayor Subardi, who was dismissed earlier
this month.
"We sent the letter on Monday and hope to receive a quick
response from the governor," Suryana said, adding that the
governor had in principle supported the proposal when he met
Cirebon councillors on Saturday last week.
Suryana said the acting mayor would take over the day-to-day
jobs of the former mayor for three months, until the appointment
of a replacement.
The Cirebon legislature dismissed Subardi on Dec. 17 for
incompetence only eight months after the same legislative body
elected him the mayor.
Subardi has insisted he remains the legitimate mayor as the
President has not approved the legislature's decision. -- JP
