Death-row inmates' time running out

SURABAYA: The Attorney General's Office expects to execute two convicted drug traffickers on death row this month, an official said.

"I cannot reveal the details but they will be executed in Medan this month," office spokesman Kemas Yahya Rahman said on Monday.

He was referring to Thai nationals Saelow Prasert, 62, and Namsong Sirilak, 32, who were convicted of smuggling heroin into the country. The third convict in the case, Indian national Ayodhya Prasadh Chaubey, was executed by firing squad last month.

The President rejected the appeals for a pardon by the three on Aug. 18.

According to law, the prosecutors must either execute or send to jail convicts whose appeals for presidential pardon or a review of their cases is rejected. -- Antara
