Death penalty and son of a defendant

From Media Indonesia

Wahyu Iman Sidarta, the son of the former Bapindo director, Subekti Ismaun, who was allegedly involved in credit fraud, said that his father deserved the death penalty if proven guilty of corruption involving US$ 40 million.

He shouldn't say that just because his father is under investigation. The presumption of innocence requires that his father be seen as innocent of any crime until proven guilty. We must assume that he is probably not guilty.

The former Bapindo director has a chance to prove his innocence in a trial which will probably begin this month.

I do not agree with Wahyu Iman Sidarta's advocating the death sentence for his father, even if his father is found guilty.

The purpose of the investigation and trial process is not to seek anyone's death, but to find the truth and to safeguard public funds.
