Dead infant found in river

JAKARTA (JP): A dead infant, estimated to be one year old, was found floating on a river in Karang Anyar village in Cikarang, Bekasi, on Saturday, a forensic staff member of the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital said yesterday.

It is believed the baby was murdered.

Bambang H.P., who examined the body, said it was found with three major knife wounds, namely on the pelvis, abdomen and on one of its thighs.

"Whoever did it must have been insane as the suspect also pulled out the infant's intestines through the cut on its pelvis," he said.

Judging from the condition of the body, it was estimated that the child may have been dead for four or five days, he said.

"Since it was dumped in the river, the decomposing process was sped up by the damp condition," he added.

The baby was found wrapped in a white cloth and a yellow sarong. It was put in a big white plastic bag.

The Cikarang Police, however, said in their report that the dead baby was a girl who was found by nearby residents at about 12 a.m. Saturday.

Police sent the baby to a hospital in Central Jakarta for a postmortem examination.

Bekasi Police precinct chief Lt. Col. Rustam Adjie was not available for comment. (04)
