Daily reports student attack

JAKARTA: Monitor Depok (Monde) daily will report the University of Indonesia's Students Action Front (FAM-UI) to the police for allegedly attacking their office, damaging several documents and property, and assaulting several journalists.

"I myself was hit in my stomach while Dadan, a reporter, was slapped (on his face)," chief editor Sunyoto said Sunday.

He said the daily will file a report on Monday.

Dozens of students descended on the newspaper office on Jl. Margonda Raya last Wednesday, when the newsroom was rushing to meet their deadline in the evening.

The students were searching for a reporter, Karim Abdullah Siregar, who wrote a story stating that several becak (three- wheel pedicab) drivers were hired by FAM-UI to stage a demonstration against the Depok Elections Commission in relation to the mayoral election on June 26.

The students were reportedly being backed by supporters of candidate Badrul Kamal, who protested the ballot counting that showed large numbers of votes going to Nur Mahmudi Ismail.

FAM-UI coordinator Zara Dian Utari said that her organization was not involved in the demonstrations against the poll commission. -- JP
