Cybercrime verdict postponed again

JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta District Court failed to hand down a verdict for the second time on Thursday in the cybercrime case involving Tjandra Sugiono, a former manager of local cosmetics giant PT Martina Berto.

Judge Chasiany R. Tandjung said on Thursday that the trial had been adjourned until next week so as to give an opportunity for other witnesses to be called.

The court was scheduled to hand down its verdict two weeks ago, but decided to postpone it by two weeks because the panel of judges trying the case had failed to reached a unanimous decision.

Tjandra allegedly registered the domain name MustikaRatu.com for PT Martina Berto, the main competitor of PT Mustika Ratu.

During Thursday's hearing, the court presented Edmon Makarim, a cyber law expert from the University of Indonesia, who said that a case of cybercrime could be brought before the courts in the country where the crime occurred or where the server was located.

But he admitted that the plaintiff and the accused involved in a case of cybercrime would most likely resolve their differences out of court.(04)
