Cushioning the blow

STOCKHOLM: Just when you thought Volvo's air bag technology had reached its zenith, along comes the inflatable curtain. Consisting of eight segments mounted in the headlining between the front and rear pillars, the IC -- as it is known -- is designed to minimize head injuries in side and multiple impacts.

Volvo already offers front and side air bags on its 850 range of cars. The latest development is expected to be in production within a couple of years.
