Cult members attacked

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Five members of an alleged cult are currently under police protection after residents of their village attacked them on Thursday night.

About 200 residents of Lemberang village, Sokaraja district, went on a rampage wrecking at least one house in apparent disgust at the teachings of the cult.

The cult's leader, Slamet Haryanto, was known to be teaching his faith to residents at least once a week.

Devine Mandate, according to residents, required an entry fee of Rp 27,000 to ensure a plot in heaven.

Through his teachings, Slamet, 42, promised serenity and peace to his followers, who could buy additional plots in heaven for Rp 27,000 each.

However, several followers became disenchanted and the faithful following soon turned into a vengeful mob.

Banyumas Police chief Lt. Col. Jhony Hutauruk confirmed that Slamet and several of his colleagues were under police protection.

"We're investigating the matter," he simply said. (45)
