Croatian embassy explains

In reference to your article UN official predicts focus on E. Slovenia (Aug. 1, 1997), one would at least expect that geographical terminology had been mastered. After all, it is more than six years since the emergence of new independent countries in southeastern Europe and the accompanying focus of world attention.

The Republic of Slovenia (including East Slovenia) is an independent country bordered by Croatia on the West, while Slavonia, to which your article is related, is a region in Croatia which shares its eastern border with the former Yugoslavia.

As for the subject of the article, let us stress that the government of the Republic of Croatia has agreed with and fully supports the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to keep a monitoring mission in the area of eastern Croatia after the departure of UNTAES on Jan. 15, 1998. This was not been mentioned in your article.

We thank you for providing your readers with these facts.
