Crisis and optimism

The current piteous state of our country makes all of us sad, upset and anxious as to what will happen in the days to come. But I myself thank God that we finally have to face such a situation.

Let's look at things from another point of view. This suffering makes us realize that many undesirable things have happened here. Indirectly the current crisis is educating us morally, mentally and politically. It generates solidarity among people, both rich and poor.

I think, at the moment, people will be ashamed to act corruptly or commit deeds which would make other people suffer. Also, in a time of crisis people cannot possibly be able to bribe officials because they do not have enough money to do so. Even the rich and the haves may be ashamed to be rich in the midst of poor people. Through this they will find the best opportunity to help their poor neighbors.

We can now expect a clean government. Industry and trade minister Mohamad "Bob" Hasan stated that he would dismiss any of his staff if they are found guilty of taking bribes. And social services minister Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana declared that she would fight corruption, collusion and nepotism within her ministry. She has shown a genuine intention to work for the welfare of the whole nation.

I'm sure they are really sincere in their words. And I pray that other cabinet members and business tycoons will do their best to create a climate conducive to a development process which benefits the country.
