Cricket not colonialism

I am writing in reference to Piero Ronci's letter Colonialism and cricket (June 28). In his letter he blames the British for "typical outbursts of racism and discrimination in Australia".

What is wrong with a cricket foundation for heaven's sake? Is it not a good thing to promote sport among young people? Cricket is a gentleman's sport which no more represents colonialism than anything else introduced by many different colonial powers throughout the world, many of which has benefited the colonized nations.

While not condoning colonialism, it would be ridiculous to suggest, for example, that Hong Kong would have such a vibrant economy and high standard of living if it had remained part of China for the last 150 years.

Oh yes, and finally Mr. Ronci, the Union Jack is not an "awkward rectangle", it is a beautiful flag and I would thank you for not insulting the standard of my Queen and country in future.
