Cricket

The 1996 Cricket World Cup finally drew to a close on Sunday, March 17, 1996, with the favorites Australia going down by 7 wickets to a revitalized Sri Lankan side.

During the last month, millions of cricket fans around the globe witnessed some exciting and remarkable games, featuring the world's top 12 teams battling it out for the mantle of world champions. The glorious uncertainties of cricket was amply demonstrated when the mighty West Indies were humbled by Kenya.

However, no problem with unpredictability over here. Everything went true to form with The Jakarta Post. While Jakarta cricket fans hoped for improved coverage from at least the semi- final stage onwards, they were sadly disappointed. Couldn't we have had some decent reporting of at least the final?

An article was published on March 19 under the heading Sri Lanka's de Silva strikes cricket gold. Gentlemen, as much as the flamboyant Aravinda de Silva bagged the man of the match award, it was the entire Sri Lankan team that won the World Cup. Cricket is a team game and as such, the entire team contributes, in one way or another, to its success or failure.
