Cricket 1

C.R. McRae's letter It's not just cricket (July 2) scores some excellent points. I would be interested to learn, however, where he got the information that soccer originated in Scotland. With a name like McRae it may be wishful thinking on his part.

Although versions of the sport have been played for many centuries in countries such as China and ancient Greece, Association Football (or soccer in the U.S.) as we know it today, began in England in the 1860's and the rules were adopted by Scotland shortly afterwards.

Similarly the game of badminton was started in England and in fact is named after the Duke of Beauford's estate. True, the game was largely developed in India by British army officers, where it was played as an outdoor sport. Scotland, however, can justifiably claim to be the home of golf.
