Crackdown on lazy civil servants

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: A week-long "Operation Discipline" has caught 150 civil servants and 70 students heading home before the end of office and school hours.

Most of the civil servants caught in the operation were junior and senior high school teachers and employees of the ministry of education and culture, state-owned banks and state companies, head of the operation's special team Srimoyo Tamtomo told The Jakarta Post.

They were mostly spotted in bus terminals, train stations, post offices and department stores, he added.

The "discipline team" consists of 60 personnel from various offices who are posted daily at 12 locations well-known as public hang-outs.

The undisciplined civil servants will be referred to their superiors for guidance, and will be punished if they commit more serious offenses in the future, he said. (wah/pwn)
