Court told to boost security

JAKARTA: Supreme Court Chief Justice Bagir Manan urged courts on Friday across the country to improve security and uphold existing rulings to ensure the safety of judges and the public during court hearings.

He made the statement following a tragic murder this week at a Sidoardjo religious court in East Java. A Navy colonel stabbed to death his former wife after losing a case against the latter. He then stabbed judge Achmad Taufiq to death.

"One of the measures that must be taken is to uphold rulings on court hearings, in which visitors are not allowed to carry weapons," Bagir said.

He added that the Supreme Court also planned to install metal detectors in courts and coordinate with the police to improve security particularly for the judges.-- Antara
